Introduction: A Camino Problem No One Talks About – Until It Itches
The Camino de Santiago is a journey many associate with nature, spirituality, and self-discovery. But alongside the romantic sunsets over Galician hills, there are less glamorous aspects. A classic among these challenges? Bed bugs.

These tiny creatures love the Camino almost as much as pilgrims. For them, every hostel is an all-you-can-eat buffet. For you, it could mean a sleepless night. But don’t worry, with a pinch of humor and some practical tips, you’ll not only survive but thrive.

Part 1: Bed Bugs and the Camino’s Unwritten Rules
Bed bugs aren’t new. They’ve been accompanying humans for centuries – and pilgrims are no exception. In medieval times, they thrived in hay beds; today, they find comfort in mattresses and backpacks. While some pilgrims complain about blisters, you might find yourself scratching your arms instead. And yes, some will tell you: “It’s part of the experience.” But really, does it have to be?

Part 2: Prevention is Better Than Scratching – Best Tips
While there’s no guarantee you’ll avoid bed bugs, these tips can lower the odds:

  1. Keep Your Backpack High:
Never leave your backpack on the floor. Use hooks or shelves whenever possible. Think of your bag as a fortress – the harder it is to reach, the safer it is.
  2. Check the Bed:
Become a detective for five minutes before settling in. Inspect the mattress seams and corners for small brown spots or tiny white eggs. If you find anything suspicious, request a different bed or even a different hostel.
  3. Trust the Liner:
A bed bug-resistant sleeping bag liner is your best friend. Lightweight and compact, it offers both physical and psychological protection.
  4. Spray It, Don’t Say It:
Bring a travel-safe anti-bed bug spray and use it on your mattress, backpack, and sleeping bag. The smell might not be your favorite, but it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Part 3: What to Do If You Encounter Them
Despite your best efforts, you might still encounter bed bugs. Don’t panic – they’re annoying but harmless. Here’s what to do:

  • Inform the Staff: Let the hostel know immediately. Most are well-equipped to handle these situations professionally.
  • Wash Everything Hot: Wash your clothes at the highest temperature possible and dry them thoroughly. If a washing machine isn’t available, look for a local laundry service.
  • Quarantine Your Gear: Seal your belongings in plastic bags until you can clean them.

Part 4: Humor Helps, Bed Bugs Don’t
On the Camino, you’ll quickly learn that humor is the best remedy. Whether it’s blisters, snoring roommates, or bed bugs – a little laughter makes everything easier. And who knows? Your “bed bug story” might become your favorite anecdote to share later.

Part 5: Conclusion – A Pilgrimage with Ups, Downs, and a Few Scratches
The Camino is a journey full of surprises – some magical, others a bit itchy. While bed bugs may be an annoying chapter in your journey, with the right preparation and mindset, you’ll overcome it.

When you lie down at night, remember: no matter how tough the day was, tomorrow brings a new sunrise and a new milestone. Buen Camino!
