Anyone coming to Fisterra—often after walking hundreds of kilometers on the Camino—is usually looking for more than just a meal at the “end of the world.” You are looking for a sense of arrival, warmth, and regeneration. That is exactly what Mar Away (located at the historic Rúa Alejandro Finisterre, 3) offers. It is a wonderfully tiny, incredibly cozy little spot that feels like a warm hug.
The Heart of the Place: Valeria & Martín 🇮🇹🇺🇾
The absolute highlight of this little gem is the owners: Valeria from Italy and her partner Martín from Uruguay. In the highly competitive gastronomic landscape of the Costa da Morte, they have carved out a bright, unique niche for themselves. No matter how busy it gets or how late it is, they always welcome every guest with a genuine, beaming smile and an incredibly uplifting, positive attitude. You walk in as a hungry stranger and leave feeling like a friend.
Premium-Quality Comfort Food
Away from the classic seafood restaurants along the harbor promenade, Mar Away focuses on a small but craft-perfected menu. Here, fast food becomes culinary art:
- The Burgers (including vegan/vegetarian): For me and many others, simply the best burgers in the area. The meat is juicy and cooked to perfection. A total highlight for veggies is the vegetarian burger with blue cheese—an absolute flavor explosion! The vegan options are also made with so much love and creativity.
- The Crepes: Thin, elastic, and reminiscent of traditional Galician filloas in the best possible way, but with a modern twist (you absolutely must try the one with Galician beef!).
- The Hot Dogs: Forget industrial fast food. Here, snappy high-quality sausages meet buttery, soft brioche buns, perfectly balanced with homemade sauces and caramelized onions.
Why a 5.0 Rating Here is Not a Statistic, But a Reality
It is no surprise at all that this place maintains a flawless 5-star rating. Mar Away is a cozy oasis shielding you from the often wild winds of the coast. With just a couple of indoor seats, it is primarily a takeaway spot, but the intimate space creates a wonderful, personal connection.
My Verdict: When you leave Fisterra, the memories of the lighthouse and the cape might eventually fade, but the warm smiles of Valeria and Martín and the taste of their amazing burgers will stay with you forever. An absolute must-visit!
Prices: Extremely fair and moderate (burgers around €10). Vibe: 11 out of 10.
Muchas gracias, Valeriana & Martín! ¡Buen camino! 💙
