A New Stage Day – Introduction & Mood
Carrión de los Condes, the spiritual heart of the Tierra de Campos, releases the pilgrims into the endless vastness of the Castilian plateau. Already with the first step out of the town you feel the change: the bustling life of the town falls away, before you the line of the horizon opens – straight, infinite, shaped by grain fields and barren winds. This 17th stage is considered one of the quietest and at the same time most demanding on the Camino Francés: not because of elevation, but because of its seeming endlessness.
The silence of the Meseta is an invitation to let your thoughts expand. Here, where heaven and earth almost touch, you are accompanied only by the crunch of your steps and the rhythmic beating of your heart.
Route & Elevation Profile
- Distance: 23.4 km
- Elevation gain/loss: +120 m / –110 m
- Difficulty: medium/easy
- Character: Extremely long, straight paths without shade; mentally demanding due to 17 km of “empty” stretch until Calzadilla de la Cueza. Afterwards gentle waves and quiet paths along the N-120.

Variants & Notes
- Supplies: Between Carrión de los Condes and Calzadilla de la Cueza (17 km) there is no regular infrastructure. Only a seasonal container kiosk (April–October, approx. 8 km after Carrión, open from 7–14h) offers drinks and snacks. Water, sun protection, and provisions are essential.
- Mobility: For pilgrims with limitations, the parallel path along the N-120 is an alternative, as gravel and mud can cause problems in places.
- Cyclists: Benefit from the flat terrain but must watch out for loose stones and proximity to traffic.
Description of the Way – With All Senses
Beyond Carrión, the Camino first leads to the church of Santiago and across the Río Carrión. Right at the start, the view of the former monastery of San Zoilo invites you to marvel – today a hotel, once one of the most important abbeys of the region.
Soon you immerse yourself in the famous “desert of the Meseta.” The Vía Aquitana, an ancient Roman trade route, lies beneath your feet – trodden by millions of feet for 2000 years. It guides you through straight paths, past fields, quiet streams, and the Fuente del Hospitalejo, a spring that has refreshed pilgrims for centuries.
After what seem like endless hours, finally the tower of Calzadilla de la Cueza rises on the horizon. A tiny village with barely 50 inhabitants, it feels like an oasis. Here pilgrims regain strength, eat, sleep, and replenish supplies. The short Calle Mayor leads directly to the N-120, which now accompanies you further.
Beyond Calzadilla the Camino passes the ruins of the former monastery of Santa María de las Tiendas, a place where monks once cared for pilgrims. Afterwards the way runs parallel to the national road, gently up and down, until after another 6 km Lédigos is reached: a tiny village, whose church of Santiago and few albergues recall centuries of pilgrim tradition.

Today’s Special Features
This stage does not lead you to a great sanctuary, but right into the spiritual heart of the Meseta. It is the emptiness that becomes the special experience here: kilometer after kilometer without distraction, only with yourself and the sky above you. Many pilgrims report that precisely this silence holds up an inner mirror – a challenge, but also a gift.
Yet the stage begins in Carrión de los Condes, one of the most historic places of the Camino Francés. Since the Middle Ages the town has been a spiritual center with numerous monasteries and churches. Especially the monastery of San Zoilo, once an important Benedictine monastery, stands out: here kings, knights, and countless pilgrims stayed. The cloisters with their delicate sculptures tell of a time when Carrión was a meeting point of European power and spirituality.
Also historically tangible is the Roman Vía Aquitana, which connected Bordeaux with Astorga. For over 2000 years, people have been making pilgrimages, marching, and traveling along the same track. Each step is thus also a step through the layers of time.
And finally there are the small oases like Calzadilla, which show that even the most barren stretches bring forth places of community. It is the paradox of this stage: emptiness and abundance at the same time – only in silence does one grasp the value of encounter.
Reflection at the End of the Stage
In the evening in Lédigos, when the sun sets over the fields, you may feel that you have sensed the true pulse of the Camino. Not a monumental building, but the silence and vastness of the Meseta grant this insight: the way itself is the wonder.
